A Letter From Scott Edwards:

Scott Edwards - Founder of Ear Training HQ and creator of Play and Train

Are you training your ears so you can take your playing to new heights?

Have you been working on ear training and wondering when you’ll be able to start using your newfound aural skills to guide your fingers around your instrument? This is the end goal of ear training after all!

When approaching ear training I usually start with dedicated exercises that focus on listening and usually singing as well. And there’s good reason for this: it’s the best way to focus our attention on training our ears so we can hear music more clearly and recognise the notes we hear.

But at the end of the day the goal isn’t just to recognise the notes we hear. It’s to recognise them and then play them confidently!

And that’s why, in addition to dedicated ear training exercises it’s also great to practice hearing music, recognising the notes and then playing them.

There are some serious problems with this though. It’s hard. In fact, for most musicians it’s just about impossible. Before you can do this with actual music you need to be at a really advanced level with ear training.

It’s a shame that most musicians don’t practice this until they’ve already got really great ears because it’s a great way to practice your instrument and train your ears at the same time. It breaks ear training up and it gets you actually playing by ear!

That’s why I’ve developed Play & Train. Play & Train is made up of exercises that slow things down so you can hear the notes, recognise them and then play them on your instrument.

They start off so slow and simple that you’ll be able to use them even if you’ve never done any ear training before, and they speed up from there so you’ll find exercises that are perfectly suited to your level as you progress.

This will allow you to combine your ear training with playing, starting from today, so you can be playing confidently by ear much faster than you otherwise would!

Warm regards,

Scott Edwards

P.S. - Play & Train comes with my personal 60 day money-back guarantee. So you’ll be able to try it out for 2 months, and if it’s not working for you I’ll refund the full price for you, no questions asked.

How does Play & Train Work?

Play & Train is made up of over 28 hours of audio exercises that are designed for you to listen to and play along with so you can train both your ears and your fingers at the same time.

The exercises are simple. Random notes are played that you have to find on your instrument and play. There are lessons included with Play & Train that will explain the best way to do it. If you've been with Ear Training HQ for a while you'll know that I'm talking about scale degrees here 😉

The exercises start simple, with only 3 notes to choose from and they get more difficult from there by adding notes and speeding up.

As I mentioned, Play & Train is thorough. There’s over an hour of exercises for each major scale and each minor scale. It adds up to over 28 hours in total so you’ll find an exercise at the right tempo, in the right key for you.

While this is simple, don't let that fool you into thinking that it won't help! This simple approach to practice is by far the most effective way to combine ear training and practice on your instrument and you won't believe the results you'll achieve with it!

What will Play & Train do for you?

There are many benefits that you’ll experience when you add these exercises to your practice routine. Here are the big three:

1. It's a great way to learn your scales

It’s really important to know your scales if you want to play confidently by ear. And I don’t mean kinda, sorta knowing your scales like a lot of beginner and intermediate musicians do. I mean really knowing them. I mean knowing not just the notes of each scale, but the scale degree of each note as well. So you know that the seventh scale degree of G major is F# and the fourth scale degree is C.

Learning your scales to this level can take some time and it can be boring. Play & Train completely changes that. It gives you a way to train your ears with your instrument in your hands while you learn them. You can choose any scale to work on at any time as well so you’re in complete control.

It’s a perfect way to combine ear training and scale practice!

2. It Builds the Habit of Hearing, Recognising and Playing

When you start playing confidently by ear you’ll be in the habit of hearing a passage, recognising the scale degree of each note, identifying the note itself (using your knowledge of scales) and then playing them.

That sounds like a lot of steps, but with practice each one will be instant and automatic.

The most difficult of those steps (by far) is the second one: recognising the scale degree of each note. That’s why most of our time on ear training focuses specifically on that step.

Most musicians don’t get a chance to practice putting all those steps together until they’ve got a well developed sense of relative pitch because that’s the step that slows them down.

Play & Train changes that. By slowing everything down you can practice all four steps together to build the habit of actually hearing music, recognising it and then playing!

3. It Breaks Things Up

I’m going to admit something right now that I really hate to admit.

Sometimes we just don’t feel like doing ear training. Ouch. I said it.

As much as I love it and the things ear training has done for me, I remember when I was doing a lot of it I had good days and bad days. And sometimes, on those bad days I just couldn’t be bothered sitting down and focusing on ear training.

On those days I would often pick up my saxophone and practice other things or just play.

This obviously isn’t a terrible thing.

But it’s better if you can mix up your ear training approach so you still spend some time working on it. It keeps the momentum up so you keep making solid progress.

Play & Train is without a doubt the best way to keep working on ear training when you simply feel like playing. It’s really handy for those days when you don’t feel like putting in a solid session with focused ear training exercises.
